Four Big Ways to Upgrade Your Nutrition
National Nutrition Month is a great reminder that nutrition shapes far more than what appears on our plates. The foods we choose influence energy levels, metabolic health, digestion, brain function, and long-term wellness.
As our founder, Kristin Hirano, MS, RD, often reminds us:
Nutrition is one of the most effective and modifiable environmental factors for promoting optimal health and reducing the risk of chronic disease throughout our lifetime.
The encouraging news is that meaningful improvements rarely require dramatic overhauls. Often, a few thoughtful shifts can open the door to better nutrition habits that support the body in powerful ways.
Here are four practical ways to upgrade your nutrition this month.

Get Out of the Food Rut
Most of us fall into familiar eating patterns. We find meals we enjoy, repeat them often, and before long, those same foods show up week after week.
There is comfort in routine, but our gut microbiome thrives on diversity. Different plant foods provide different fibers, polyphenols, vitamins, and minerals that feed a wide variety of beneficial gut bacteria. When the menu stays narrow, the microbiome receives fewer of the nutrients that support its balance.
A simple nutrition upgrade begins with variety.
Adding new vegetables, fruits, legumes, herbs, nuts, and whole grains brings fresh nutrients into the diet while supporting the gut microbiome.
Something as small as rotating vegetables at the grocery store, trying a new grain, or introducing a different type of bean can expand the range of nutrients reaching the digestive system.
Over time, this kind of variety helps create a richer nutritional environment for the body.

Take On a Nutrition Challenge
Many people find that a challenge adds motivation and focus to nutrition habits. It creates a clear goal and encourages us to pay closer attention to what we eat.
One popular challenge in the gut health world is to reach 30 different plant foods per week. This concept comes from research exploring how dietary diversity influences the microbiome. The greater the variety of plant foods consumed, the more diverse the gut bacteria tend to be.

Another approach gaining traction is Fibermaxxing, which focuses on increasing daily fiber intake to help close the fiber gap. Most adults fall far short of recommended fiber intake, yet fiber plays an essential role in digestion, blood sugar balance, cholesterol management, and gut health.
Tracking fiber intake for a week can be eye-opening. Many people discover that a few intentional adjustments can dramatically increase their daily fiber.

Nutrition challenges work because they shift attention toward progress. Instead of focusing on restriction, the goal becomes adding more foods rather than taking them away!

Take Inventory of Sugar and Sweeteners
Another powerful nutrition upgrade begins with awareness of how much sugar and artificial/high-intensity sweeteners/sugar alcohols are in our diets every day.
Many foods contain added sugars that can quietly accumulate throughout the day. Coffee drinks, flavored yogurt, sauces, snack bars, and packaged foods often contribute more sugar than we realize.
Artificial sweeteners deserve attention as well. While they are widely used as sugar replacements, research continues to explore how certain artificial/high-intensity sweeteners (including monk fruit and stevia) may influence the gut microbiome, appetite regulation, and metabolic signaling.
Spend a week looking closely at ingredient labels. The results can be eye-opening. Track where sugars and artificial/high-intensity sweeteners appear in your foods and drinks. This kind of awareness often reveals patterns that influence our health and wellness goals.
Reducing reliance on highly sweetened foods and beverages allows the palate to recalibrate and makes space for the natural flavors of whole foods. Many people discover that once those sweet cravings shift, fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes become far more satisfying.
Small changes in this area can have a meaningful impact on metabolic health, energy levels, and overall nutritional quality.

Reframe How You Think About Food
Another powerful nutrition upgrade begins with perspective.
For many people, food is viewed primarily through the lens of calories or weight. Yet nutrition influences many systems throughout the body.
-
Food helps regulate blood sugar.
-
Food feeds the gut microbiome.
-
Food supports immune function.
-
Food influences brain chemistry, energy production, and metabolic signaling.
Thinking about food as functional fuel changes the conversation. Meals become opportunities to nourish the body in ways that extend far beyond hunger.
Athletes often think this way because performance depends on nutrition. The same mindset can benefit anyone who wants to feel energized, focused, and resilient.
Each meal offers the chance to deliver nutrients the body uses to repair tissues, regulate hormones, and maintain metabolic balance. When viewed through that lens, nutrition becomes a daily opportunity to support health.
Like Kristin says, “Every bite is a choice and an opportunity!”

Explore the Power of Nutrition
Nutrition upgrades often start with curiosity in the kitchen and variety on the plate. A new plant food here. A different grain or legume there. Explore the ingredients that bring fresh ideas to your plate.
These small shifts expand food diversity and help build a stronger nutritional foundation that supports energy, digestion, and metabolic health.
National Nutrition Month is a perfect time to take a closer look at the foods that show up on your plate each day. A few thoughtful upgrades can open the door to lasting changes that help us all live just better.®!
